 Day One

  • How the forced acceptance of the European culture has continued over many generations, resulting in many emotionally “disconnected” Indian people.  This disconnection has led to breakdowns in parenting skills, alcoholism, violence, and other dysfunctional lifestyles
  • Substance abuse problems of today – the “why” of the high Indian substance abuse and F.A.S. (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome) rates – how both can be prevented
  • Historical Perspective of Indian drinking patterns; how unique Indian drinking/drug use patterns still influence Indian people
  • New research on the unique motivation triggers, value systems, and learning strengths of Native children
  • Indian Learning Strengths – How to capitalize on the unique thinking, motivation and value systems of Native people; using their learning strengths as vehicles to high academic achievements in reading, math and science
  • How to engage students in behavior identification, consequence determination and long-term behavior change

Day Two

  • Survival skills for children living in active substance abuse environments
  • How to detect “help” signals of students in need (children of alcoholics/addicts)
  • How family substance affects a child’s social skills, self-esteem and education
  • Family addiction behaviors – the dysfunctional baggage children unknowingly carry to school
  • When C.O.A. (children of alcoholics) baggage becomes dysfunctional student behavior – the professional response
  • Redirecting dysfunctional student behavior

ü       On-the-spot ways to redirect negative behavior/cussing/fighting

ü       How to depersonalize misbehaviors, avoid anger, yet help the student

ü       Seven (7) steps to facilitate long-term behavioral change
