Refusing Drugs - Student Team Training Drug-Free Student Teams are the answer. The same peer pressure that entices our youth to use drugs can be used to create an even stronger desire not to use. That is why Drug-Free Student Teams are trained in carrying drug-free messages directly into your classrooms. They transform the realities of Native drug use into powerful Indian refusal socio dramas. Through their positive peer pressure, these youth teams turn being drug-free into a celebrated youth status, where drug-free is the most "neat", "in", "cool", and powerful way to be. The end result is a safe, happy, drug-free school and community. Students who complete the training to be a Drug-Free Student Team member are committed to helping others avoid violence and remain drug-free. They represent positive role models who are actively involved in teaching others drug refusal skills and the benefits of living drug-free lives. Their presence can be the driving force for a drug-free school and community.
Process A team of highly trained Native college students will come to your school for three (3) days. During this intense, but fun, training, teams of your students will learn drug prevention facts, prevention training skills, as well as speaking, acting and stage management.
Training Schedule Three (3) days, regular school hours (example: 8:00 a.m. - 3:15 p.m.) At the end of training, these students will role model the good life of being drug-free. Wearing special imprinted jackets identifying them as Drug-Free Team members, they will be highly visible and admired throughout your school and community. "Children Rise to the Level of Your Expectations" This is your opportunity to fully equip your youth to turn peer pressure into a positive force. There is youth strength in numbers. That is why we encourage you to invest in your children by training multiple teams. Your student teams will then build a drug-free reputation for your school and more importantly, establish an atmosphere of drug-free expectations for new students. The special recognition given to your school's drug-free team will send the message - "Kids who to not use drugs win. This is a drug-free school". Each team receives fleece pullovers in their school colors, drug refusal curriculum, puppetry and socio drama curriculum. In addition, training includes two (2) adult volunteers who provide logistical assistance during the year. " A child who never starts using drugs never needs treatment"
We are "Preventionists" We believe that the answer in Indian Country lies in preventing children from starting. Therefore, we focus on helping schools and communities prevent children from all drug/chemical experimentation. While we advocate continued support for existing youth treatment programs, our goal is to increase the attention and resources given to preventing children from ever starting. Remember: Indian people are not doomed to addiction. We only need to change to "Prevention - Native Ways".
